Julatten Climate
Julatten birding is a much more pleasant experience than along
the Far North Queensland coast as we are situated at an altitude
of 440m bringing cooler temperatures and generally lower humidity.
The "Wet Tropics" of Far North Queensland experience a
monsoonal climate from December through to April (Wet Season). Overnight
temperatures are in the range of 22-26ºC and during the day up to
34ºC, but with cloud cover often a lot cooler. In this time the
monsoonal trough can give huge amounts of rainfall and the occasional
cyclone. However, the weather can also be dry and sunny in this
period and the Green Season, as it is also called, renews the vibrant
tropical vegetation and is a time when many birds and other wildlife
breed. Be prepared to get wet, but also to enjoy the experience.
From May the temperatures are cooler and although is still may rain,
it is more likely to be showers than deluges. In the winter months
of June -August, the overnight temperatures are in the range of
10-16ºc (but can get as low as 6ºc on occasions) and during the
day a pleasant 22-26º. October and November are called the buildup
months when the humidity and temperature build up once more to produce
storms as a prelude to the monsoon (Wet Season). Remember - climate
is what you expect and weather is what you get!
Being in the Tropics of Queensland, we only experience about one
hour variation of daylight during the year. In winter months it
gets light around 6.30am and dark around 6pm. In the summer months
5.30am - 7pm.
